(Khmer students only) About a Founder, Tomoko Kasahara With a master’s degree in art from Tokyo educational university, she started her career as an art teacher at a public high school in Tokyo in 1976. It has been 31 years since she has been giving art education to the children in art school. To fulfil her wish, she made a “small art school” where there would be a kids’ art gallery and much more. After visiting India and Nepal, her search came to an end in Siem Reap, Cambodia. There she built a Siem reap art school in 2007. Initially, she gave art education to the children of orphanages and neighbourhood kids. She gave free art classes and painting classes for kids and provided them with free art supplies. To fulfil her dream of accessible art education, she and her team members made a “Khmer kids art gallery.” The team created it to raise funds for the school and painting classes for kids. To help us realize our vision, we established a venue for more people to recognize the talents and abilities of Khmer Children. Former Japanese art teacher Kasahara Tomoko set it up in 2008, and it now has around 100 pupils. Many teachers were killed under Pol Pot and there are still no school art classes. Kasahara believes that drawing freely as a child is deeply important to personal growth. Six of her former students now teach at the school themselves. Follow their efforts to revitalize the spirit of art among Cambodia’s children. View on demand video >> FAQ How can I apply for the lesson?Currently, we are not accepting any new students. We teach only underprivileged Khmer children (both parents are Khmer) especially children who are willing to learn, but lack opportunities to learn. We collaborate with some international and local NGOs. Their children come on their fixed schedule. Where does the school funding come from? Most of the funding is from Teacher Tomoko’s her own saving. She has prepared and saved her money for more than 20 years since she started thinking to build a free art school. Originally she was thinking to teach about 40-50 students, but there are more students than she expected and have 350 students now in 2020. Therefore, we started seeking some other funding. We were granted some awards from some foundation in 2014. We also established a social enterprise to help funds for the Small Art School by selling printed products and original artworks. How can I support the school? We highly appreciate your generous offer to support us. We accept donations via Paypal for money transfer.
