Our expertise Accessory drive trains for aircraft engines The accessory drive train (ADT) is a mechanical assembly comprising a system of gears and shafts that taps some of the engine’s power and transfers it to the key subsystems and equipment that help keep the engine (oil system, fuel system, electrics) and the aircraft (electric and hydraulic systems) performing as they should. Aircraft-mounted accessory gearboxes The aircraft-mounted accessory gearbox drives the equipment that generates the electrical power needed by airplane and helicopter systems. Reduction gearboxes for airplane and helicopter engines The reduction gearbox is a major module in the propulsion system and is part of the drivetrain between the gas generator and the propeller. It lowers the rotation speed between the engine output and the main propellor gearbox, while transmitting all of the engine’s mechanical power. Research and technology Our engineers and technicians design and develop breakthrough technologies and the next-generation power transmission architectures that will help make flying greener. Materials and processes Our mechanical power transmission systems are constantly being improved with the introduction of new materials and processes, such as machining from solid and additive manufacturing. Design Our teams use computer-aided mechanical design tools and 3D modeling to design and develop technical solutions to meet the evolving requirements of engine manufacturers. Prototyping To develop the maturity and robustness of the new technologies designed and developed by our teams, they build prototypes to test these major innovations. Testing Our testing center reflects our commitment to ensure that the development of new power transmission technologies and architectures includes rigorous altitude and endurance testing. Production engineering Our teams implement and manage robust manufacturing processes in order to meet the cost, quality and on-time delivery requirements of our customers. Manufacture and assembly Building on the experience gained with more than 45,000 ADTs, our expertise spans all aspects of gear production, and we offer different procedures for manufacturing casings, from casting to solid machining. Services and support As an original equipment manufacturer (OEM), we offer specific repair solutions to meet the needs of each customer, from parts supply to by-the-hour support contracts. Based on a 25-year, renewable partnership, the company is the exclusive supplier of these systems for all future commercial aircraft engines made by Rolls-Royce. One of the joint venture’s first products was the accessory drive train for the Trent 7000 engine powering the Airbus A330neo. It has facilities in Colombes (near Paris), Derby (UK), Dahlewitz (Germany) and Ropczyce (Poland).    Focus on innovation: additive manufacturing Additive manufacturing is an alternative to the traditional casting process. Instead of removing material by machining, it involves adding only the necessary material. Safran Transmission Systems designs gears and cases using the selective laser melting (SLM) method.  Also known as 3D printing, additive manufacturing is a real innovation driver and offers a number of advantages: it helps overcome design constraints in order to reduce weight and decrease the number of constituent parts, which in turn lowers production costs. And because part design is entirely digital, right through to printing, we can make prototypes much faster.    Focus on innovation: reduction gearboxes With our experience in propeller speed reduction units for turboprop engines and our overall expertise in propulsion systems, Safran Transmission Systems has naturally begun developing the high-power reduction gearboxes for the next generation of very-high-bypass-ratio engines. A multidisciplinary team of over 100 engineers and technicians is designing and developing the breakthrough technologies for these future gearboxes.
