Όμως η ζωή τους και η συμπεριφορά τους στις ελληνικές θάλασσες τον υπόλοιπο χρόνο παραμένουν σε μεγάλο βαθμό άγνωστες.Στα λιβάδια Ποσειδωνίας του Αιγαίου συναντάμε συχνά θαλάσσιες χελώνες, κυρίως καρέτα-καρέτα, αλλά και πράσινες χελώνες. Αυτά τα ανεκτίμητα «δάση» των θαλασσών μας τους προσφέρουν τροφή και ασφαλές καταφύγιο όλον τον χρόνο.Κάθε θαλάσσια χελώνα φέρει μοναδικά χαρακτηριστικά που μας επιτρέπουν να αναγνωρίζουμε το κάθε άτομο ξεχωριστά. Μέσα από συστηματικές καταγραφές σε επιλεγμένα θαλάσσια λιβάδια, οι ερευνητές του Ινστιτούτου Αρχιπέλαγος παρακολουθούν τους πληθυσμούς τους καθ’ όλη τη διάρκεια του έτους και καταγράφουν τη συμπεριφορά τους. Φωτογραφίζοντας και αναλύοντας τα μορφολογικά τους χαρακτηριστικά, δημιουργούμε καταλόγους φωτο-ταυτοποίησης για κάθε χελώνα που εντοπίζεται, ώστε να μπορούμε να αναγνωρίσουμε κάθε άτομο όταν επανεμφανίζεται, ακόμη και σε διαφορετική περιοχή.Καλύπτοντας τα πολυάριθμα κενά γνώσης για αυτούς τους ιδιαίτερα σημαντικούς κατοίκους των θαλασσών μας, μπορούμε να κατανοήσουμε καλύτερα το πώς να συμβάλλουμε πιο αποτελεσματικά στην προστασία τους. ...
