December 22, 2025 BAYELSA TRANSPORT SYSTEM: Govt Sues Cooperation Of Residents Over New Policy – BayelsaWatch maximios / News / Bayelsa State Government has urged residents of the state and the general public to cooperate and support its policies aimed at promoting efficiency and effectiveness in the transport sector. The Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, made the call when he paid an unscheduled visit to the Bayelsa Ultramodern Transport Terminal at Igbogene, a suburb of Yenagoa, the state capital, on Tuesday. Senator Ewhrudjakpo, in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media, Mr Doubara Atasi, appealed to the motoring public and commuters to be patient with the present administration as it takes steps to address some of the problems confronting the sector. He explained that the recent policy mandating transporters and commuters to use only government approved motorparks was made in the best interest of the state. According to him, the shutting down of illegal parks and their subsequent relocation to the state-of-the-art transport terminal at Igbogene for intercity transport has brought decency and serenity to the hitherto chaotic Tombia Junction and other areas in the state capital. The Deputy Governor noted that while government intends to build more befitting parks to make commuting easier, he said the Ekeki Motorpark would continue to cater to the needs of those travelling within the state. Senator Ewhrudjakpo, thanked the immediate past Governor and now Senator representing Bayelsa West, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, for conceiving the project and bringing it to near completion before leaving office. He equally commended Governor Douye Diri for completing the project and putting it to use, describing the recent relocation order as part of the state government’s efforts to implement its urban renewal policy. The Deputy Governor, who sympathised with the people for some of the inconveniences thrown up by the new policy, assured that government was doing everything possible to address all reasonable challenges associated with the use of the new transport terminal. His words: “You know there is no state that has this kind of facility in our country for now. This is an airport terminal for some states and even for some countries. It was a well-thought-out plan by the immediate past Governor, Senator Seriake Dickson. “We want to thank him for coming up with this project, which we inherited as part of the assets though there was some liability of completion. “We also thank His Excellency, Governor Douye Diri for not only completing the project but also putting it to use by ordering the movement of all transporters involved in intercity transport to this place because that is the standard in every international city. “What we have come here to do is to evaluate the implementation of no side parks in Bayelsa State. And as you know, for now, we have two parks in Yenagoa: the Ekeki Park and this park. “Those who ought not to come here to load, for example, what is the business of somebody going to Ogbia, or Nembe, coming as far as Igbogene to takeoff? What will somebody going to Amassoma, or anywhere in Southern Ijaw come to do here instead of Ekeki park? “So it is better they are somewhere there, so that it is only those who are actually going out of the state that will come here. That is part of the thinking we are doing, and in any case, we have a few issues as to the inadequacy of the space and the issue of the utilization of the spaces available. And we are addressing them. “All that Bayelsans and commuters need to do is that they have to be patient. As a government, we are trying to moderate the issue of trekking to junction before boarding vehicles to the city centre. Those issues are being managed. So they should be patient.” The Deputy Governor was accompanied on the inspection by the Commissioner for Transport, Hon. Preye Broderick, the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mrs Ebiuwou Koku-Obiyai, their Bayelsa Central Special Duties counterpart, Mr Mandy Sylvanus Akpalo, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Works, Dr Johnson Dagana and other top government officials. Signed Mr Doubara Atasi Senior Special Assistant on Media to the Deputy Governor Bayelsa State 21/01/25 December 7, 2025 DEMOCRACY IN NIGERIA: THE JOURNEY SO FAR – BayelsaWatch maximios / News / Abraham Lincoln, the first and only American President to earn a patent for his buoy invention in 1849, described democracy as a “government of the people, by the people and for the people.” That is, a system of government where the eligible populace exercise their electoral power to rule directly or by elected representatives. Thus, democracy provides institutions that express the supremacy of the popular will on social directions and policies. For instance, in the Greek City states where democracy started, economic equality, mutual feeling and political liberty were desirable and so made it successful by the populace. Accordingly, in the United States, Canada, the Great Britain, Nigeria, and other democratic states, the common features of democracy include: the existence of periodic elections, equal rights of adults to vote and be voted for, equality for executive and judicial offices, freedom of speech, publication and association, and more. These rights provide the opportunity for political participation, which is the right to choose rulers to decide the general lines of policies. In the same vein, democracy provides opportunities for personality development, such as access to knowledge through state aided education, security against unemployment and minimum wage intended at reducing the disparities in the distribution of wealth, including provision against sickness, fair conditions for work and conditions to guide against economic slavery. In this regard, over the years, Nigerian democracy has specified the duties of the governments and the rights of the people, by presenting measures to encourage personal freedom and equal consideration for all classes in the country. As John Stuart Mill rightly notes, “democracy is superior to other forms of government,” this according to him is because the rights and the interests of all are secured, as opposed to autocratic systems. Although, democracy in Nigeria is as old as the country from 1914, it has been disrupted by series of military juntas from 1966 to 1979 and 1983 to 1999, with the major military rule credited to General Sani Abacha from 1993-1998, which ended as a result of his death. Then the emergence of General Abdulsalam Abubakar from 1998-1999, who transferred power to president-elect, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo on May 29, 1999, marking the return of democracy from military dictatorship. The end of military rule brought about a new era of regular elections, as well as civil liberties; freedom of the press, independent judiciary, the rule of law, checks and balances and the end of arbitrary arrests and torture associated with the military era. Hence, the recognition of democracy day over the years on May 29 to commemorate the restoration of democracy in the country, however, the date was changed by President Muhammadu Buhari on June 6, 2018, to June 12, to mark the election of Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola (MKO), on June 12, 1993; adjudged to be the freest and fairest election ever conducted in Nigeria. While democracy over the years has given rise to the periodic election of leaders into various offices and the smooth transition of elected leadership, increase in welfare services; upward review of minimum wage, improved infrastructural development, education, health care services, youth empowerment and so on, yet the country lacks in so many areas. In recent times, Nigeria is faced with a myriad of socio-economic/political issues bedevilling the peace, security and progress of the nation. Electoral irregularities, such as disruption of electoral processes (ballot box snatching), vote buying, falsification of election results, corruption, restiveness amongst youths, kidnapping, terrorism (Boko Haram attacks), farmers/herders clashes, resulting in shortage of food for the growing population, unemployment, lack of economic diversification, and general violence which are undemocratic have been on the rise. Hence, as we mark the 2021 democracy day, there is the urgent need for government and the populace to embrace peace, deliberate dialogue and tolerance to douse the threatening issues of insecurity and hardship bedevilling the nation. The judicial system has to be strengthened and made independent as to dispense justice without fear or favour. The menace of corruption which has eaten deep into the fabric of the society should be fought with all sense of sincerity and seriousness, as it will go a long way to instil trust in the minds of the people. Government should ensure security agencies; military, police, civil defence, the customs, Para-military organisations, are perfectly trained, equipped and encouraged to optimally perform their duties within the confines of the law. Civil Societies and the Press should be given optimum freedom to operate, by presenting constructive ideas and criticisms to improve government policies and programmes for the good society. Above all, in a bid to eschew violence in the polity, constitutional means should be followed to seek redress as that will go a long way to curtail destruction of lives and property in the country. November 11, 2025 2023: Governor Diri Cautions Politicians Against Sponsorship Of Terrorism – BayelsaWatch maximios / News / Bayelsa Governor, Senator Douye Diri, on Wednesday, cautioned politicians against sponsoring terrorism and other criminal acts in the country as preparations for the 2023 general elections gather momentum. Governor Diri gave the warning at the 72nd session of the Bayelsa State Executive Council at the Exco Chambers in Government House, Yenagoa. The Governor, who spoke through his Deputy, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, said there was a compelling need to appeal to all politicians to eschew criminality and brigandage as they go about pursuing their legitimate political ambitions. A statement by the Senior Special Assistant on Media to the Deputy Governor, Mr Doubara Atasi, noted that the Governor particularly urged the political class in Bayelsa to place the common good of the state above their personal interests. Governor Diri condemned a recent case of desecration of the law court by some unscrupulous elements over the hearing of an intra-party matter concerning the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state. According to the Bayelsa Chief Executive, the frequency at which the judiciary was being threatened, maligned, coerced and desecrated in the country was beyond permissible thresholds in any society. He maintained that the brutish era when people used their might and power to acquire and exercise political power was over, and therefore, stressed the need for all political actors to play by the rules. He also advised those who had matters pending in court, to allow the courts determine the outcome, pointing out that the courts in Bayelsa are courts of first instance, which did not preclude anybody’s right of appeal. His words, “We are appealing to our politicians to eschew criminality, brigandage, and sponsorship of terrorism. We are also appealing to them to play by the rules and uphold decorum in all their activities. “Only a couple of days ago, an inter-party matter led to the desecration of our court. Let the political class play by the rule of law and not by the rule of might. “We are no longer in the brutish era when people use their might to acquire and exercise power. So, the processes must be allowed to run their full course. “Politicians who have matters in court should allow the courts to determine the outcomes. In any case, the courts here are courts of first instance, which does not preclude your right of appeal. They should allow the courts do their job”, he said. Governor Diri, who thanked Bayelsans for their tremendous support and cooperation so far, however, appealed to the PDP faithful in the state to shun acrimonious debates, blackmail and lies over party nominations ahead of the primaries. He said all stakeholders should be ready to make sacrifice in the overall interest of the party when and where necessary, to move the party and the state forward.
