Zeeburgerpad 53, 1019 AB Amsterdam Works from the Collection of Holly van Houten Werkplaats Typografie presents a catalog of ‘Works from the Collection of Holly van Houten.’ Spanning multiple decades and personally selected from around the world, the collection includes over a thousand items that memorialize the life of this candidly private, bohemian connoisseur. Carefully examined by our specialists, a curated selection of rarities, antiquities, oddities, and works of art are available in this exclusive auction, offered as part of Printed Matter’s LA Art Book Fair in Van Houten’s beloved city of Los Angeles. TAKE A DEEP BREATH. IT IS WHAT IT IS WHILE IT IS. SMILE. Fifteen films ranging from six to seven minutes were made by the participants of Werkplaats Typografie. The films have been compiled for the occasion of this screening, and named in honour of the obscure mantra which guided the cohort throughout. The filmmakers approached the process with an innocence and enthusiasm that arises when working outside of one’s typical field. The result is a [insert positive word] compilation film, premiering at the Eye Filmmuseum, 13.4.2025 6:30PM. ISSUE ISSUE ISSUE ISSUE is a series of erratically published issues, each issue addressing an issue. ISSUE ISSUE is edited, designed, and published by Geke Zaal. Kardesler Groente & Fruit 2 “Kardesler Groente & Fruit 2” is a shop published by Werkplaats Typografie. The shop is established based on the compression, transfer, and decompression of “Kardesler Groente & Fruit,” a fruit & vegetable shop located in west Amsterdam. As a common place of interaction, a place of trading goods, a place of trading stories, of precious encounters and small gestures; a ubiquitous site, so central to our daily routine, this shop blends in seamlessly within the neighborhood. By researching and embodying the context of this physical market as a stage, “Kardesler Groente & Fruit 2” presents a hyperreality of embedded storytelling, with a focus on the commonly overlooked quotidian qualities of the omnipresent fruit & vegetable shop. Join Werkplaats Typografie on the rooftop during the Fair to share stories over some freshly cut fruits. Boiling Room for Hot Reading Werkplaats Typografie took shelter in the basement again, seeking comfort amongst glowing gilded conduits and generously thick brick walls. How are you dealing with the temperatures in PS1? Do you need a break? A hot chocolate? A blanket perhaps? Did you know that warm air rises to the ceiling? We read somewhere that if one is feeling cold, one should put their ceiling fan on its lowest setting, in clockwise direction, to push the hot air back to the floor where one can feel it. Boiler rooms are not usually known to be the most suitable spaces for simmering down, nevertheless we loved to warmly welcome you to come down to our Boiling Room for Hot Reading, where we provided you with some freshly forged (pre)texts and plenty other excellent reasons to chill. This to be able to sell outside and swap our books with local shops and visitors. The books we bought along the way then became the inventory of the bookshop we presented at the Art Book Fair. We flew to Houston, Texas, and drove from there stopping along the way in Austin, San Antonio, Marfa, Big Bend, El Paso, White Sands, Phoenix, Quartzite, Slab City, Salton Sea, Joshua Tree and Los Angeles. The WT is centred on self-initiated projects and assignments with meetings, lectures, excursions, seminars, and readings geared towards self-accountable and independently motivated work and research. Werkplaats Typografie is directed by graphic designer Armand Mevis and educator Anniek Brattinga. Additional regular teaching staff includes Danny van den Dungen (Experimental Jetset), Batia Suter, Jungmyung Lee, and Paul Elliman. Robert Milne and So-Yeon Kim assist in the general coordination of the WT. Guests are regularly invited for studio visits, to review work, give presentations or supervise a workshop. The WT is frequently asked to contribute to national and international events, manifestations or site specific projects. Part of the WT programme is reserved for collaborating with external clients. The Werkplaats Typografie programme stimulates and practices critical reflection on the basis of a broad cultural perspective. Participants engage in research in and through arts, involving content and form, text and image, theory and practice, in relation to one’s intended professional design and art practice. Alongside individually driven research and collective projects, participants can work on commissioned assignments for external clients. Assignments can be instigated by the Werkplaats Typografie, external clients, or by the participants themselves. The various outcomes of these can be found, and bought, in the WT Shop. For additional information see this PDF. ADMISSIONS Applications to the WT can be sent any time of the year as a PDF format by file sharing or email to mail@werkplaatstypografie.org. To be considered for the upcoming semester, the DEADLINE for submission is 1 MARCH, 2026.
