He has made music in various bands and solo projects since 1993, but has made this project his main focus since 2010. While its sound is firmly rooted in industrial music, Mechanical Ghost features an eclectic blend of influences including goth, electro, new wave, ambient, EBM, rock, punk and post-punk, metal, classical, jazz, and all-out noise. Mechanical Ghost’s sound is characterized by heavy beats, metallic clangs, harsh bursts of distortion, lush walls of synthesizers, and mangled manic vocals; held together by painstaking wall-of-sound production. While often challenging, the aim of the music is to create something that is equal parts ugly and beautiful, harsh and ethereal, all with a steady beat that you can dance to. Mechanical Ghost released its first full album, “Shadowbox,” in 2014. It was a dark synth record that reflected on escaping toxic beliefs while simultaneously separating one’s self from toxic people. It was written at a time when Dominick’s life had been upended, and is equal parts internal exploration and catharsis. In 2016, Mechanical Ghost released “Ars Moriendi Vol. 1: Stepping Sideways and Descending,” followed by “Ars Moriendi Vol. 2: Oneiroi in Flux” in 2018. These dark ambient albums are two sides of the same coin, and are best discussed together. They are effectively an unbinding ritual that explores the concept of submerging into darkness, and finding the light on the other side. They were born from dreams and other liminal mind-states, and inspired by concepts found in necromancy, oneiromancy, and chaos magick. In 2018, Mechanical Ghost also released a remaster of some earlier tracks from 2005, entitled “The Gaki Sessions: Seppuku Party 1702.” These are early powernoise recordings that were the framework for what would eventually become Mechanical Ghost. The songs were originally recorded half-jokingly, but eventually became an experiment in pushing sonic limits while maintaining listenability. Mechanical Ghost’s music has been featured on the True Crime Horror Story podcast, and in the horror-comedy film “The Neighbor.” In 2024, after 14 years of existence, Mechanical Ghost made its debut as a live project. A new album is currently in the works, and more shows are being booked. Through all of its incarnations, this project is still going strong and evolving.
