Creating a Pocket Forest in Minneapolis In partnership with SUGi, we created a pocket forest—a densely packed tree and shrub area in urban spaces—at the McKinley Neighborhood Association in North Minneapolis. This will support 200 youth from WE WIN, a non-profit for children's social and academic success, by providing shade and protection from extreme heat, a safe play area and supplying children food to eat at school while giving them a place to learn about their environment by growing food. Watch the recap video. American Forests Partnership The Life Time Foundation has provided a $1 million grant to American Forests to support restoration of the threatened whitebark pine in the western U.S. Whitebark pine is a high-elevation keystone species that has been experiencing large-scale die-off caused by disease, pests and climate change.Learn More. As part of our Healthy Planet mission, we partnered with SUGi to plant 1,400 densely packed trees and shrubs and create a pocket forest for the McKinley Neighborhood Association. With volunteer help and ongoing care from youth at WE WIN, a non-profit for children’s social and academic success, these rapidly growing plants will mature and provide the community with shade from heat, fresh produce to harvest, and space to learn about the environment and reconnect with nature.
