More information Selection of research highlights Research News & Events October 08, 2024 Perspectives for the medicine of the future What opportunities lie ahead for the future of medical research and healthcare? Scientists from the Helmholtz Association share their ideas with decision-makers from science, politics, patient organizations, biotech, and the pharmaceutical industry at the first Helmholtz Health Summit in Berlin. Science September 30, 2024 Medicine Needs More Innovation We at the Helmholtz Association have everything we need to leverage the potential of biomedical engineering in Germany. We simply need to assemble all the puzzle pieces thoughtfully and unite people who have never collaborated before, says our Scientific Director Maike Sander. Science September 30, 2024 The pioneer of single-cell sequencing Ashley Sanders, Group Leader of the Genome Instability and Somatic Mosaicism Lab, developed a technique to sequence strands of DNA in single cells. Today it is the most accurate method to detect DNA rearrangements. She hopes the technique will help reveal clues on how diseases develop. Science September 30, 2024 New images through high magnetic field strengths In mid-September, researchers from all over the world gathered in Berlin to explore the current and future possibilities of magnetic resonance imaging. The annual symposium was hosted by the team of physicist Professor Thoralf Niendorf from the Max Delbrück Center. Science September 30, 2024 Hypertension with less harm Enno Klußmann of the Max Delbrück Center aims to help reducing the harmful consequences of high blood pressure by imitating a rare mutation. His plan to activate a specific enzyme called PDE3A to protect the heart and kidneys is now being funded with €400,000 by the Else Kröner-Fresenius Foundation. Science September 26, 2024 Modelling the human kidney with organoids Dr. Melissa Little, a world leader in stem cell research, successfully developed the first kidney organoid. In advance of her lecture at the Max Delbrück Center, she shares insights about the road to that eureka moment, the journey since and the state of stem cell and organoid research today. September 24, 2024 Human and other primate hearts differ genetically A team in the Hübner and Diecke Labs at the Max Delbrück Center have shown how human and non-human primate hearts differ genetically. The study, published in “Nature Cardiovascular Research,” reveals evolutionary adaptations in human hearts and provides new insights into cardiac disease. September 12, 2024 Gut microbiome influences location of immune cells Researchers at the Experimental and Clinical Research Center of Max Delbrück Center and Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin have found that microbial communities in the mouse GI tract are unevenly distributed, which influences immune cell populations. The work was published in “Gut Microbes.” Institute & Campus September 12, 2024 Tim Flink heads the Strategy Unit A political scientist and expert in research policy, Tim Flink plans to enhance collaboration, align research with industry needs, and strengthen our societal and political relevance.
