Popular reviews See More FallenGrace BACKER reviewed Haunted Castle Revisited Completed on Windows PC I've seen, as well as been a part of, discussions around remakes. One of the topics that often gets raised is if a game needs a remake or not. A game from last generation still playable on current hardware? Games that still play well now? Do they actually need it except for a slight visual boost? One of the more interesting views though, and one I share is about the type of game being remade should be games that were awful when they came out being given a second chance. Games that maybe have promise and good ideas but for whatever reason never really came together.I can tell you from experience the original Haunted Castle from 1988 is certainly an awful game. I played it two years ago on Konami's Arcade Classics Collection. I actually gave up in disgust on stage 5 and there are only 6 stages. Having a remake of this in 2024 was not on my yearly bingo card and was a pleasant surprise to hear it was a bonus game on the Castlevania Dominus Collection as a throw in with the DS games. Hearing it was made by M2 then hearing the Bloody Tears remake music? I had to give this a go.They actually did it. They took the core of Haunted Castle and actually made it into a good game. I'm not talking just about the visuals or music which are both upgrades but the actual design. The game feels better to play, smoother and more responsive. The basic level ideas are there but adjusted with elements removed or extended making for a more fun and balanced experience. While I can't do a like for like for the whole game I replayed the first level for both games as the Dominus collection comes with the original arcade release too (I imagine for comparison sake which was a great idea). The awful wall firing stones at you steadily is gone, the tree enemies no longer can be hit but are a slightly longer section as an environmental hazard instead, the boss room is now larger with more room to manoeuvre and can now be accessed from above and below etc. It's the same basic game and layout only Haunted Castle Revisited is simply better. The enemy balancing is better, the movement is better, the art is better. Going into the second level the design for the environments especially is such an improvement visually and the new pixel art is really gorgeous. The music is also such an uplift too in quality. I already mentioned the big one in Bloody Tears but take just Stage 1 and Stage 2 as examples. The new OST is genuine fire. There are a few other quality of life improvements too. You can now stage select from the menu for levels you got to and even the section of that level you got to if you so choose. The game now also has infinite continues and just feels less frustrating from it's arcade design elements that are still present such as a timer which I died to once before I realised it was there.I must say it feels good to have finally beaten a version of Haunted Castle. I actually played through it twice to feel the flow better after knowing the game the first play through. It also feels good to have a truly terrible game brought back with real care and attention to it. I love this got remade correcting a lot of the issues it had the first time but keeping the core of what the game was. Is this an amazing game though? I wouldn't say it is. It's still easily Identifiable as Haunted Castle only this time, you know....actually good.Certainly worth a play and it's kind of crazy to me that this is the first new Castlevania game in years and it came as a bonus extra to a collection shadow dropped out of nowhere.+ Visually is such an upgrade but retains the art design and chunky sprites of the original.+ The new music composed by Chibi-Tech is absolute fire.+ A lot of quality of life improvements in how the game feels to control, enemy and level design changes, stage select and infinite continues if you need it. 51 Likes 2 Open review Paggi reviewed Crypt of the NecroDancer Completed on Windows PC Holy shit... the experience of beating this game is both heaven and hell. It's a dungeon crawler in which you move as if the floor was a tabletop game, with the caveat of having to do an action(be it move a square, an attack or use an item) whenever a beat of the song comes up. The beat interval is almost always fixed so the bigger challenge is knowing when to attack or move based on the enemies patterns, which are very telegraphed and can be easily memorized with enough tries. Even though the game is classified as a roguelike, that part of the game is mostly optional, since every run is composed of 4(5 with DLC) zones, which may be tackled back to back only if you want to, otherwise you can complete each one separatedly and get to the end of the game anyway. More additions like training with any enemy or boss you want and the capabilities of banning an item from a pool or starting with a specific item are also possibilities - for a cost, of course -, so you don't need to rely that much on RNG.The game pretty much only caters to those who enjoy both genres it mixes up, because the difficulty curve of the game is bizarrely steep, and you will die A LOT before you can accomplish anything, so if you aren't sure you will like the game, do not insist, really. It presents many characters, something between 15 and 20, but the Story Mode is shared between only 3 of them, and completing a run with the first one will unlock the second and so on, and these three characters are the only ones which include exclusive bosses and cutscenes to each one of them. However, be warned that the final section of the story, played by the third character, is absurdingly much harder than any of the other characters you may have experienced before, because you cannot be hit or even miss a beat or it will kill you. I've raged and tried quitting a lot when finishing this run, but since I was so 'close', I insisted and after ~20 hours, I finally beat the game.Unless you really, really liked memorizing every pattern and strategy possible and are absolutely having a good time going through each run, I advise you should not hustle in such a challenging game, it truly showed to me that this is the hardest game I have ever played and I'm 100% sure I won't be playing this game again.I may have forgotten to point something out because this game is very overarching and overwhelming in how much content it have, and you can even change the default soundtrack to remixes or other versions so you won't get bored while listening to it, and that includes chiptunes or metal remixes, and even a mashup with the Danganronpa soundtrack! The art is very beautiful and cozy too, and you can change the skin of every character to another one, which again features the appearance of many Danganronpa characters, so it's good fanservice to fans of that murder mystery series. Oh, and there's a Hatsune Miku DLC that I absolutely won't check because I'm leaving this game forever. 37 Likes 1 Open review MegaTheRealOne BACKER reviewed Fixeight Completed on Arcade Recently, I went ahead and checked out a game from the company Aicom, who I hadn’t covered anything from in quite a while, and I ended up having a pretty good time doing that, so I figured I would go ahead and do it again for another company I have covered before: Toaplan! These were the guys that were responsible for games like Truxton, Snow Bros. and the non-butchered version of Zero Wing, all of which I liked quite a bit when I played them and would recommend (to a degree). However, once again, it has been quite a while since I have touched any of their titles, so while I’m the process of still waiting for Truxton Extreme and Snow Bros. Wonderland to come out, we may as well cover yet another one of these. So, after putting them all in a roulette wheel once again, it landed on the game that you all definitely know about and love all the same, FixEight. In all seriousness though, I have never heard of this game before, and from looking at screenshots and game demos, it is pretty obvious why that is: it looks generic as hell. Of course, it didn’t look bad, and I was sure that I was gonna get something out of the game by trying it out, but if I went into the game expecting some kind of hidden arcade masterpiece, I would be about as let down as I was when I was born, and my parents didn’t even show up for it! So, I downloaded the game, booted it up, played through it and, say it with me now: it was generic as hell! But a good kind of generic, so it gets brownie points for that. It manages to be a good game that embraces the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” mentality that is a great way to kill an afternoon if you have absolutely nothing else to do.The story is as generic as the game itself, where in the distant future of whatever year you wanna think it is, a race of aliens known as the Gozzu have risen from their humble planet Fortuna (making this a crossover with Star Fox) and have invaded not just the galaxy they are in, but the entirety of the universe itself. In response to this, the Galactic Federation (making this a crossover with Metroid) decides to free eight separate prisoners from their containment to team up and travel to Fortuna, where they will fight back the Gozzu menace, defeat their leader once and for all, and save the universe from their destruction. It is essentially just the story of the Suicide Squad, except somehow more boring and generic, but it works well enough for being a simple set-up, adding some extra flavor into the bland mixture, and it does get you going immediately, which I can’t fault in the slightest. The graphics are pretty good, having plenty of very-well made sprites for all of the characters, enemies, bosses, and locations that you will travel through in the whole game, but not only does it not look too different from Toaplan’s other games, but also from other arcade games in general, so it is nothing to get too excited about, which can also be said for the music, as it is pretty good and gives off the arcade-y action vibe that you would want to see from one of these games, but none of the tracks are memorable enough to make me want to absorb them into my ears so I will be humming along to them later, and the gameplay/control is similar to other run ‘n gun games of this style, and it can be fun enough for those that are fans of this style and aren’t wanting a new thing in their game every five seconds like me.The game is a top-down run ‘n gun game, where you take control of one of eight different characters, each one not only being visually distinct from one another, but also having their own set of weapons that you can work with throughout the game, take on a set of seven different levels, each one differing from the last in some way while throwing plenty of different deadly forces at your way, shoot down everything that moves using the many different weapons and bombs at your disposal, gather plenty of different upgrades to not only make your weapons stronger but to also give yourself more speed and defense against whatever may be coming up, and take on plenty of bosses, all of which can be pretty tough to take down and have their own unique methods of attack, but with enough patience, dodging skills and credits, you’ll do just fine. There you go, that’s the game, take the controller, don’t die, and have a blast playing it, because this is some good ol’ fashioned arcade fun right here that you and a buddy can play and have a great time with for a half hour before you then move on and never touch it again.Like with most run ‘n gun games of this era, this game differentiates itself from the others when it comes to the weapon system, with the way this one works being…. somewhat flawed. Rather than simply grabbing an item that will give you a different kind of weapon as you go through these stages, you will instead find these many panels on the floor throughout the stages, and whenever you step on one of them, you will then swap out with the secondary weapon that you have. At first, I liked this mechanic, as it makes it so that you won’t easily end up getting a weapon you won’t like and be stuck with it until you get it back again, but then I realized it is kind of a bad mechanic when placed alongside the level design. You see, for some of the weapons that you get in the game, you will be locked into facing one direction, without being able to aim elsewhere, and this sort of fucks you over when you are forced to go through these corridors with enemies on your side that you can’t move to shoot down, causing you to end up dying. Of course, you can avoid all of this by not having the weapon that locks you in a direction, but not only does that limit how powerful your weapons can become, but you also won’t know when these sections are coming up, which makes it a complete gamble at points that really isn’t fun to deal with.Apart from that though, everything else works exactly as you would think it would, and it can be quite fun. The gameplay is simple, yet effective at giving you the adrenaline that these kinds of arcade games should, the combat is a bit too shmup-esque at times, but it is quite a challenge that feels great to overcome, the amount of weapons you can get across all of the characters is quite a lot, and considering how many times they can be upgraded with power-ups, you will have a lot to work with here, and there are even sections where you will be riding on a jet scooter and shooting down different enemies and bosses along the way, which…… just makes the game a shmup, but hey, it’s still fun, and I will not argue against fun. Aside from that whole tirade I went on earlier about the weapon systems being pretty flawed, the only other problems that the game has are the ones that we all know all too well now. This game doesn’t really do that much to stand out from other similar run ‘n gun games, and while the slight new additions and additional gameplay segments are fun and keep the game somewhat fresh, those who aren’t fans of these kinds of games, or ones that are sick of them, won’t be finding anything unique about this one that will make them jump out of their chair in excitement. In addition, the game has arcade syndrome as well, to where it doesn’t feel as bad as other games, but it can still be a pain in the ass to take on, especially in the later stages, where you will be held up at numerous points from moving forward cause of all the enemies on-screen. Then again though, maybe I can’t tell just how hard these games really are anymore because of how many of them I have played at this point……….. eh, probably not.Overall, despite a lack of change, pretty difficult moments at times, and that weapon system that needed more time in the oven, FixEight was still a solid arcade game that was fun to play, with it having simple yet effective and explosive combat you can jump right into, plenty of characters and weapons to try out to find the one that is best suited for you, and plenty of different huge bosses and tricky enemies to take down with a friend for that good ol’ fashioned arcade experience. I would recommend it for those who are fans of other similar run ‘n gun games, as well as the other titles from Toaplan, because while this one isn’t gonna be appearing on anyone’s top lists, it will still be a fun distraction that you will probably like quite a bit, and that’s a;; that really matters at the end of the day. Also, speaking of Toaplan’s other titles, I guess I should mention right now that this game is supposed to be somewhat of a spiritual successor to that of Outzone, another game by the company that pretty much plays the exact same way. I guess I gotta review that one at some point…… I dunno, maybe I’ll do it whenever I reach 800 games, where I have literally nothing else to choose from again.Game #740 31 Likes 0 Open review EpicWafflez reviewed Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine II Completed on PlayStation 5 Space Marine II is an excellent example of the fact that you don't always need a 100-hour long, open-world game, focused on story to be fun.
