National Fire News National Interagency Coordination Center NIFC Facebook The National Significant Wildland Fire Potential Outlook was issued today by Predictive Services at NIFC. Look ahead at the last two months of the year, and then into #FireYear2025. After fire activity decreased the latter half ... of September, another increase in fire activity occurred the first half of October, as the National #PreparednessLevel rose from three (on a scale of 1-5) at the beginning of the month to five October 8. This escalation back to five represented the first time the National Preparedness Level increased to five on three separate occasions in the same fire year. Fire activity then greatly moderated the latter half of October, with the National Preparedness Level decreasing to four October 18, three October 22, and two October 29. While most geographic areas followed this overall trend in activity, the Southern and Eastern Areas remained moderately active through the end of October. #FireYear2024 (year-to-date) annual acres burned for the US is above the 10-year average at 124% of normal, but the national year-to-date tally of wildfires remains below average, near 93%. 🔥Read the full outlook here: https://www.nifc.gov/nicc-files/predictive/outlooks/monthly_seasonal_outlook.pdf #NationalFireNewsShow MoreSomehow November is upon us! The month of November is #NationalGratitudeMonth and we are jumping on the opportunity to continue to emphasis our gratitude for wildland firefighters and support personnel. Throughout the year, the ... support from communities around the nation hasn't gone unnoticed. Signs thanking firefighters were placed along highways, in front yards, and on local businesses. While firefighters battled the #BenchLakeFire, community members from Stanley, Idaho placed this sign along the highway to show their gratitude. Wildland firefighters have worked tirelessly all of #FireYear2024 to protect our communities and natural resources. Take a moment to #ThankAFirefighter this month as we lead up to Thanksgiving! 📸Photo by Piper Brandt, BLM.Show More#NationalFireNews: October 31, 2024. Currently, 21 large wildfires are active nationally and current fires have burned 883,318 acres. About 3,000 wildland firefighters and support personnel are assigned to incidents, including 3 ... complex incident management teams, 35 crews, 258 engines, and 31 helicopters. Wildland firefighters and support personnel continue to assist with hurricane relief efforts in North Carolina. Are you heading out on a hunting trip? We ask that you do your part to prevent wildfires while you are out on public lands. With warm weather and dry fuels in some areas, there is still a risk for wildfires. Here are some tips for your trip. ➡Check ATVs and chainsaws for required spark arrestors. ➡Check on any fire restrictions in the location you plan to head. ➡If allowed, make sure your campfire is dead out before leaving camp. ➡Don't park vehicles over dry grass or brush. ➡Ensure your chains are properly secured and not dragging. ➡Know of any target shooting restrictions. ➡If you see a new fire start, call 911 to report immediately. Thank you for choosing to #RecreateResponsibly. Enjoy your time out there! 🔥 More NFN: https://www.nifc.gov/fire-information/nfn 📸Photo 1 of the #RushFire in Oklahoma. National Association of State Foresters U.S. Forest Service National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) IAFC - International Association of Fire ChiefsShow MoreNIFC Virtual Tour National Interagency Coordination Center Welcome to the Nation's Logistical Support Center The nation’s federal wildland fire community is a large and complex organization across the Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Land Management, the National Park Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the Bureau of Indian Affairs; and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Forest Service. These agencies manage wildland fire on nearly 700 million acres of federal public land, or one-fifth of the total land area in the United States. NIFC is home to the national fire management programs of each federal fire agency, along with partners including the National Association of State Foresters, the U.S. Fire Administration, and the National Weather Service. A Department of Defense liaison was added as a permanent partner at NIFC in 2008. Working together, these partners provide leadership, policy oversight and coordination to manage the nation’s wildland fire programs. In recent years, the role of the agencies at NIFC has grown to include all types of fire management, including hazardous fuels treatments, integrated fire and land-use planning, and more. Fire management under this larger umbrella is designed to achieve not only suppression goals, but to accomplish a broad spectrum of natural resource objectives, and do so in an efficient, cost-effective manner.
