By providing both financial and technical assistance to initiatives focused on preserving and revitalizing the environment, all while improving the welfare and livelihoods of individuals, SGP showcases how community engagement can effectively maintain the fine balance between human needs and environmental imperatives. SGP provides financial support to community-driven projects tackling global environmental challenges, offering grants of up to $50,000. This support is facilitated through a decentralized approach at the country level, overseen by a diverse National Steering Committee. Each participating country is assisted by a dedicated SGP Country Program Team. It is currently implemented by the UNDP, on behalf of the GEF partnership. SGP is structured to stimulate grassroots efforts by empowering local civil society and community-based organizations, which includes providing support to women, Indigenous Peoples, youth, and individuals with disabilities. SGP remains one of the GEF’s flagship initiatives and enjoys strong and broad support from its stakeholders, including governments, donors, civil society, and community-based organizations. Over the course of the last 20 years, SGP has provided grants to over 20,500 civil society projects. The country has diverse agro climatic areas extending from the Himalayan peaks in the North, through the arid and semi-arid central region, to tropical rain forests in the south and a lengthy coastline of 7,517 km, harbouring globally significant terrestrial and marine biodiversity; Nearly 700 million rural people directly depend upon climate-sensitive sectors (agriculture, forests and fisheries) and natural resources for their sustenance and livelihoods. The GEF Small Grants Programme (SGP) has been operating in India for more than 20 years on strengthening the capacities of local communities in delivering the mutually beneficial conservation and socioeconomic outcomes, particularly involving vulnerable and marginalized groups. The OP-7 of the GEF Small Grants Programme in India (SGP India), aims to enable communities and organizations in some of the most vulnerable and least developed areas, by enhancing their socio-ecological resilience. The approach focuses on collective action through participatory landscape planning and integrated management approaches, to promote innovative livelihood options, thereby producing local and global environmental benefits. SGP India, OP 7 is being implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in partnership with the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) is the National Host Institution (NHI) for coordinating and facilitating SGP in India. The design of the OP7 is focused on three regions in the country: (a) highlands of the North East, (b) Central semi-arid region of India and (c) Indian coastal regions.
